Memory Verse

“the Lord raised them up a deliverer,”

Judges 3:15 (KJV, excerpt)

God heard Israel's cry for help and raised Ehud as a deliverer.

God Heard His People

The people of Israel had turned away from God and were living under a harsh ruler. They cried to the Lord for help. God raised Ehud, a man from Benjamin who was left-handed, to help deliver them. The story ends with the land enjoying eighty years of rest.

Brother Marvin's lesson reminds us that God can use someone other people might overlook. We do not all have the same abilities or come from the same kind of home. We can ask God for help, recognize each person's gifts, and practice kindness and faithfulness every day.

1

Ask God for help

Judges 3:15

The people cried to the Lord, and He heard them. They needed His help. We can speak honestly to God about our needs and ask trusted people to help us, too.

Youth Lesson

Tell God one thing that worries you. Talk with a parent, caregiver, or teacher about the help you need.

2

Value the gifts God gives

Judges 3:15

Ehud was left-handed. His story helps us remember that people have different abilities. Something different about a person does not make that person less valuable or unable to help.

Youth Lesson

Name one strength you have. Then notice a strength in someone whose abilities are different from yours.

3

Let words become helpful actions

Lesson application; Judges 3:27-30

Ehud led the people, and the land received rest. Brother Marvin asked the class to let actions match their prayers. We can put what we learn into practice through care, honesty, and service.

Youth Lesson

If you say you care about someone, ask what would help and choose one kind action you can take.

4

Stay faithful in good times, too

Judges 3:30; closing lesson application

The people received a long season of rest. Brother Marvin reminded the class to stay committed before, during, and after trouble. We can keep praying and giving thanks when life feels comfortable.

Youth Lesson

Choose a daily time to pray or read a short Bible passage with a trusted adult. Keep the habit throughout the week.

What Can We Learn?

  • Bring worries to God and ask trusted adults for help.
  • Respect people whose abilities or backgrounds differ from yours.
  • Use your words and actions to care for others.
  • Keep praying and giving thanks in both hard and happy times.

My Gifts Can Help

Draw four boxes on a sheet of paper. Use the labels below to write or draw a gift you have, a person who needs help, a kind action you can take, and a habit you will keep. Share your plan with a trusted adult. Ask them to help you choose a useful and safe way to serve.

Weekly Challenge

  • Say the memory-verse excerpt with a parent, caregiver, or teacher.
  • Encourage someone by naming a strength you appreciate in them.
  • Practice one helpful action and one daily prayer habit this week.

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for hearing me and loving me. Thank You for making people with different gifts. Help me notice the good in others and use my abilities to care for someone. When I make a mistake, help me be honest and take a better step. Teach me to keep praying and giving thanks every day. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Study with Your Family

Adapted for youth and children from Brother Marvin Mathis's October 18 lesson, A Hero Who's Not a Hero. The adult reading uses the NCV; the short memory excerpt is KJV. Focus passages: Judges 3:15 and 3:30, with background in Judges 3:12-30.
